spring cuboree

posted Monday, 27 April 2009

We had a great time at the spring Cuboree. The weather was lovely for camping. It's fun going to these big events, in a way that's different from an ordinary camping trip; there are lots of people to talk to, lots of kids for Nick to play with, and organized activities instead of making our own fun all day. The boys tried a variety of games Saturday morning, moving around by pack. Favorites included archery and tug-of-war (although the later resulted in several casualties, mostly minor rope burns when boys failed to let go). Other activities were less popular, in which case we tended to drift into the shade to rest until it was time to move to the next station. Nick tried his hand at fishing in the afternoon. No luck, but he didn't seem to mind. It did occur to Rich and me, watching all those boys fishing together, that maybe we should replace his preschool Shrek poll with something a little bigger.

There were several group meals, either with our den (i.e. all the Tiger cubs) or with the whole pack. We did potluck, which worked pretty well, and resulted in a much nicer spread than I would have cooked myself, I can assure you. There were only a couple problems with the weekend. The other Tiger cubs and their families all left by Saturday evening, which was a pity; Nick isn't too comfortable playing with the older boys by himself, so Sunday he was largely without playmates. And there are ant mounds everywhere at that campground; by the end of the weekend, both kids were covered in bites. Zoe because she doesn't know to avoid the mounds or brush ants off, and Nick because he persisted in riling up the ants in the face of repeated warnings. But, you know, they'll stop itching in a month or two. I'm sure they'll be fine.
